The new year is almost here! While we all work to stay safe and healthy, it’s important to think ahead for your 2021. Here’s a quick list of considerations when budgeting for the next year of you and your family’s healthcare.
Your healthcare premium. Healthcare premiums are the (usually) monthly amount you pay to have health insurance. Most projections show that premium costs are rising in 2021 – make sure to account for any premium increases in your budget.
Your deductible. This is the fixed amount you’ll pay out-of-pocket before your insurance kicks in. As with premiums, these are expected to increase in 2021. Another trend among many insurance providers is now to include prescription costs in your deductible amount. If that’s the case for you, it means your prescriptions will have to be paid out-of-pocket until you hit that deductible.
Utilization. This is tricky to predict because of COVID. COVID’s been taxing our healthcare system, making some other care difficult to schedule at times. To err on the side of caution, consider your family’s healthcare utilization pre-COVID. Did you meet your deductible for 2019? What did your expenses look like? And for 2021, is there care you know you’ll need? Use these factors to help inform your budget.
