The Gasconade County Republican has become the first to publish an opinion editorial in support of recent reports by Associated Industries of Missouri and the Taxpayers Research Institute of Missouri in the ongoing discussion regarding Governor “Jay” Nixon’s veto of seven taxpayer protection bills.
After enduring months of one-sided attacks by Gov. Nixon and his staff, taxpayers found a friendly voice in Rep. Tom Hurst, who authored the opinion editorial. The article points out that the reports published by Associated Industries of Missouri and the Taxpayers Research Institute of Missouri show the numbers used by the Nixon Administration to frighten local officials into supporting his veto of these bills are not based on reliable data or sound methodology. In fact, the vetoed bills are designed to clarify the tax law to help prevent misinterpretation of the tax laws by the Missouri Department of Revenue, the tax collecting arm of the Nixon Administration.
