Timmons: Lighthizer a “Solid Pick” for USTR

National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) President and CEO Jay Timmons issued the following statement on the nomination of Robert “Bob” Lighthizer as United States Trade Representative (USTR):

“President-elect Donald Trump’s selection of Bob Lighthizer as the next U.S. Trade Representative shows he’s serious about making the United States more competitive in the global marketplace. Bob is a solid pick for USTR, with a wealth of experience both on Capitol Hill and as a deputy USTR under President Ronald Reagan. The NAM’s own seasoned trade expert, Linda Dempsey, who serves as our vice president of international economic affairs, has worked closely with Bob on past foreign trade issues impacting the steel industry and has seen firsthand his dedication and strategic approach to breaking down trade barriers and eliminating unfair trade practices overseas. We very much look forward to continuing to work with Bob and the Office of the USTR to advance trade policies that will keep the United States competitive for manufacturers and open new markets for the products we make. “Manufacturers can secure more jobs here in the United States when global markets are open and rules of fairness are enforced for all countries. Open and fair trade is essential to our country’s economic leadership, and with strong trade enforcement, strong trade rules and the right trade deals, the United States will be the destination for even more manufacturing. “Ultimately, America should be writing the rules of international trade. We hope President-elect Trump and Bob Lighthizer will get to work on day one to forge a robust trade agenda that will grow our domestic economy.”
