Statute of limitations reform clears Senate committee

FEBRUARY 20, 2020 - SB 633, sponsored by Sen. Dan Hegeman, was approved today by the Senate Government Reform Committee.

The bill, supported by Associated Industries of Missouri and nearly every other business organization, would lower the statute of limitations for bringing a tort case in Missouri from five years to two.

"Missouri is an outlier with our current five year statute of limitations," said Ray McCarty, president and CEO of Associated Industries of Missouri in testimony before the Committee on February 11, 2020. "Most other states limit such lawsuits to three years or less from the date the alleged harm occurred," he said.

Only the Missouri Association of Trial Attorneys opposed the bill in the hearing.

The bill will now be considered by the full Missouri Senate.
