St. Louis County ‘bans the box’ for government employees

St. Louis County will no longer ask job applicants for criminal histories in their initial employment applications.

With the action, St. Louis County joins other area governments that have implemented what are known as “ban the box” policies.

The executive order says that “employment decisions will not be based on the criminal history of a job applicant unless demonstrably job-related and consistent with business necessity, or unless state or federal law prohibits hiring an applicant with certain convictions for a particular position.” The order takes effect immediately.

The order applies only to applicants seeking a job in St. Louis County government.
