The Republican Steering Committee on Capitol Hill has tapped Texas Congressman Kevin Brady to be the new chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee.
Brady replaces new House Speaker Paul Ryan, who at one time called the powerful position his “dream job.” The committee is the chief tax writing committee of the House. Congressman Jason Smith (R-MO) also serves on the committee.
“I’m honored to lead this talented committee because House Republicans and Speaker Paul Ryan are advancing a pro-growth agenda to get this country back on track. This includes taking real steps toward fixing this broken tax code, reforming welfare, saving Social Security and Medicare for the long term and enlarging America’s economic freedom to trade,” said Brady in a statement released from his office. “We have a lot of work to do, and it won’t happen overnight for this reason: While many of these solutions originate in the Ways and Means Committee, I intend to seek the ideas and active engagement of our Republican Conference. Big challenges require big effort from all of us.”
Reaction to Brady’s appointment was favorable from the National Association of Manufacturers, which released this statement. In it, NAM cited Brady as a champion of the so-called “Tax Extenders”, a package of important tax provisions that expired at the end of 2014. Brady recently filed legislation to not only extend the research and development (R&D) tax credit, but enhance the provision and make it permanent once and for all.
