Reliable infrastructure and sustained investment is key to manufacturers’ competiveness and today, the House overwhelmingly approved a conference report for a long-term highway bill. This bill, which includes many key priorities for manufacturers, is welcome news after years of short-term extensions.

Before the vote, the NAM issued a Key Vote letter on this legislation that outlined the many manufacturing priorities included in the bill, including a critical multi-year authorization of the Export-Import Bank.

“The NAM supports transportation policies that invest in infrastructure to ensure U.S. manufacturing competitiveness,” said NAM Senior Vice President of Policy and Government Relations Aric Newhouse in the Key Vote Letter circulated on December 2nd.

“The need to update and modernize our nation’s transportation infrastructure extends far beyond state transportation departments and road builders. Manufacturers need stable and reliable infrastructure to compete in today’s economy. Funding our roads, bridges and transit systems is a national priority; many states do not have the resources or ability to keep up with the demands of aging infrastructure. H.R. 22 would ensure continued investment in highways and transit systems by authorizing federal programs for five years.

“Additionally, the NAM strongly supports provisions included in the conference report to reauthorize the Export-Import (Ex-Im) Bank,” said Newhouse. “The bank is essential for domestic manufacturers to counter the hundreds of billions of dollars of export financing that foreign governments offer to their exporters. Reauthorization of the bank’s charter is critical to U.S. manufacturing strength in the fiercely competitive global economy.”

Next the bill moves to the Senate where we anticipate votes this evening. For more information about manufacturers infrastructure needs and the need for a reauthorization of the Ex-Im Bank, visit our website.
