Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., remembered today

Updated: Jan 17, 2022

As the nation celebrates Martin Luther King, Jr. Day today, we remember his legacy through some of his own words. Here are some exceptional quotes that give an insight into the man, who fought for equality and urged peaceful change at a very turbulent time in our nation’s history:

“Everybody can be great … because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.”
“Faith is taking the first step even when you can’t see the whole staircase.”
“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.”
“We must come to see that the end we seek is a society at peace with itself, a society that can live with its conscience.”
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Some people enjoy talking about issues and politics that divide us, rather than those that unite us. For those of us too young to remember, we should take time to look at one of Dr. King’s most famous speeches, the “Dream” speech, and see what we may still learn from it today. Here is a video of the speech given August 28, 1963, at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. (copyright belongs to the family of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.):
