Legislation that will allow for greater representation by representatives of mining and industry on the state’s Clean Water Commission is on its way to Governor Nixon for his signature.
On Wednesday, the House of Representatives passed House Bill 1713, sponsored by Rep. Tim Remole. The original bill encouraged the Department of Natural Resources to reach out to communities with information regarding options to upgrade the existing lagoon system to meet discharge requirements.
When the bill reached the State Senate, Sen. Brian Munzlinger added language that allows for more representation on the Clean Water Commission from agriculture, industry and mining. Previously, agriculture, mining and industry membership was limited to two members. The change mandates that at least two members of the commission must represent mining and industry.
The change, supported by Associated Industries of Missouri, will allow for more representation from entities most effected by the decisions of the commission.
The bill received final passage by a margin of 112-37. It now awaits the governor’s signature.
