Veterans Affairs Secretary, David Shulkin, MD, addressed reporters at the White House on Monday to explain the agency’s decision to update their EHR system with Cerner.
Cerner Corp., the North Kansas City-based health care IT company, has been awarded the Department of Veterans Affairs contract for a next-generation electronic health records system.

Shulkin’s announcement Monday said Cerner’s work on the Department of Defense’s system, now known as MHS Genesis, pushed the decision in the company’s favor.
After 17 years of talking about melding the two health records systems, adoption of the same system “will ultimately result in all patient data residing in one common system,” the secretary said.
