Missouri’s House Speaker is pleased with a general election that retained Republican supermajorities in both his chamber and the State Senate, as well as in the governor’s office and nearly all other statewide offices, according to a press release. Republicans will have 117 members in the state House and 24 in the Senate.
“I think we’re going to find a tremendous amount of common ground and it’s built around a common vision for what Missouri looks like,” said Speaker Todd Richardson (R – Poplar Bluff). “That’s a Missouri that respects and protects individual freedom. That’s a Missouri that has as stronger, more vibrant, dynamic economy that we have today. It’s a Missouri that has a strong education system for every Missourian no matter where they were born or where they live.”
When the General Assembly comes back in January, top priorities are issues that will improve Missouri’s economy, including labor reform, tort reform, ethics reform, education reform, and removing government barriers to economic development.
Among those initiatives, Governor-elect Eric Greitens has guaranteed to make Missouri a Right to Work state, meaning the establishment of laws that diminish the power of labor unions and strengthen the state’s business climate. Right to Work states ‘have greater economic vitality, official Department of Labor statistics show, with faster growth in manufacturing and nonagricultural jobs, lower unemployment rates and fewer work stoppages.’ (Visit National Right to Work‘s website for more information.)
“Associated Industries of Missouri pledges to work with the Governor, House and Senate leadership to pass many pieces of legislation that are crucial to fostering a great business environment in Missouri, including tort reform, tax issues, and Right to Work,” said Ray McCarty, president of Associated Industries of Missouri.
