Another horror story of Department of Revenue overreach comes to light as AIM president Ray McCarty attended the second hearing of the Senate Interim Committee on Tax Administration Practices in St. Louis Tuesday.
At the hearing, witnesses told another story of abusive treatment by DOR. The taxpayers contacted DOR when starting their cheerleading instruction business, were told by DOR they did not need to register for sales tax, were subsequently audited and assessed, and settled for prospective collection of tax and paying back taxes out of their pocket, even though they continue to contact the DOR and get answers that their business is exempt. Others in their field are not charging tax and they are losing customers to their competitors that are not charging tax.
For a full account of the hearing, here is a story written by Collin Reischman of the Missouri Times.
