Jobless rate dips below 5 percent in St. Joseph

A government shutdown and botched health insurance rollout provided plenty of reasons for the local job market to remain shaky.

But St. Joseph’s unemployment rate dropped below 5 percent in October as areas across the country saw an uptick in hiring at the start of the fall. Figures from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics showed St. Joseph’s unemployment rate was 4.8 percent in October, down from 5 percent in September and 5.9 percent in October of 2012.
