The Trump administration released a plan to replace the Obama Administration’s Clean Power Plan (CPP), which had placed restrictions on coal-fired power plants. The previous plan created more bureaucratic red tape and would have created higher energy costs.
The new plan is called the Affordable Clean Energy (ACE) rule. It was signed by EPA acting Administrator Andrew Wheeler on Monday. The law would greatly reduce bureaucratic red tape. It would also reduce compliance costs by up to $6.4 billion compared to the CPP.
The ACE rule provides several important guidelines to both reduce emissions and provide flexibility. These guidelines include, clearly defined standards, lists of technologies for a “standard of performance” and giving states time to develop their own plans.
“The ACE Rule would restore the rule of law and empower states to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and provide modern, reliable, and affordable energy for all Americans,” Wheeler was quoted as saying in a statement in The Hill.
“Today’s proposal provides the states and regulated community the certainty they need to continue environmental progress while fulfilling President Trump’s goal of energy dominance.”
“We’re ending intrusive EPA regulations that kill jobs . . . and raise the price of energy so quickly and so substantially,” stated President Trump.
Ray McCarty, president and CEO of Associated Industries of Missouri agreed with the President. “For too many years, regulations that have required early closing of coal-fired power plants have threatened our economy with higher electricity costs, especially in Missouri where a vast majority of our electricity is generated by coal,” he said.
