Bridge bonding resolution vetted by committee

The Senate Rules, Joint Rules, Resolutions and Ethics Committee, chaired by Sen. Caleb Rowden, heard a SCR 14, supported by Governor Mike Parson that would authorize $351 million in bonds to improve 250 bridges in the state.

Senate President Pro Tem Dave Schatz sponsored the resolution. He said the debt service on the bonds would be about $29 million per year and the projects to be completed are already in the state transportation plan that was developed with input from regional planning organizations across the state.

The Missouri Transportation and Development Council (MTD) and Associated Industries of Missouri (AIM) testified in support of the legislation.

“MTD is the oldest transportation advocacy group in the state, having been formed to pass the first bond issue in a campaign to ‘Get Missouri Out of the Mud’ in 1920,” said Ray McCarty, president of AIM and executive director of MTD. “We believe funding of bridges is absolutely critical as our bridges are crumbling. We need to fix the problem before a major disaster occurs and both MTD and AIM support this proposal,” he said.

A vote to move the bill out of committee is expected soon.
