As most of you know by now, Wednesday, Governor Nixon vetoed our top legislative priority: the tax cut for EVERY Missouri taxpayer, including every Missouri employer. It is extremely important that you communicate to legislators in your area that we will need their support to override the Governor’s veto in September.
This legislation is based on common sense and allows taxpayers to share in the growth in the economy, and the corresponding growth in state tax revenues, by allowing taxpayers to keep more of their money. Technical problems with the bill may easily be corrected before they become law because they are not effective until January 1, 2015. This means we can pass a bill to fix any problems in the next regular session of the legislature in plenty of time to negate any negative consequences claimed by those supporting the Governor’s veto.
In an environment where states are aggressively competing for businesses to locate in their states, Missouri needs tools to remain competitive. This bill provides the BEST economic development tool: allowing job creators to keep more of their money to reinvest in their employee’s salaries, create even more new jobs, and invest in capital improvements. HB 253 would have done just that and it is unfortunate the Governor could not share the vision of governors in neighboring states that see the value of lowering taxes and thereby increasing state revenues by expanding the tax base.
Thank you for your support and input during this legislative session, and we look forward to working with you to educate our legislators on the need to override the Governor’s veto of this important legislation.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me and thank you for your support of Associated Industries of Missouri!
Sincerely,
Ray McCarty
